They’ve held their place on our list of the best wireless earbuds on the market, and they’ve only improved over the years as Apple has added features through firmware updates.

That said, not everyone has an iPhone, nor does everyone want to spend hundreds of dollars on their earbuds. So, while the AirPods Pro 2 are good, they are not an ideal choice for everyone. For everyone who doesn’t want AirPods, I’ve compiled the list below of my best AirPods Pro 2 alternatives. I’ve personally tested each of the earbuds on this list, and we have also put them through our SoundGuys testing lab to get objective measurements on sound quality, noise canceling performance, and battery life.

Android alternative: Google Pixel Buds Pro 2

The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 in someone's hand.

The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are very tiny earbuds.

If you are jealous of the seamless integration and plethora of features that iPhone users get with their AirPods, look to the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 (Google Pixel Buds Pro 2). As the native earbud offering from the maker of Android, you get a very similar experience to that of AirPods with an iPhone, including instant pairing across devices and AI integration. Just like how the AirPods Pro 2 have a custom H2 chip, the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 have a proprietary Tensor A1 chip to handle on-device processing for improved noise canceling and sound quality.

One of my favorite things about the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is how comfortable these earbuds are. I often turn to AirPods Pro 2 because of how well they fit my ears, but the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are right up there in terms of fit and comfort. Each earbud is small and lightweight, and the soft rubber fin on the back of the earbuds holds them in place while working out.

Based on our measurements, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 have very similar performance to the AirPods Pro 2. We found the Pixel Buds Pro 2 reduce the loudness of outside noise by an average of 80%, just a tad behind the 83% of the AirPods Pro 2. Our frequency response measurements show that the default sound of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is very similar to the AirPods Pro 2. One plus of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 is that it comes with a 5-band custom equalizer within the Pixel Buds app, so you can actually customize the sound of the earbuds to your liking, something that is a challenge with AirPods.

Samsung alternative: Galaxy Buds3 Pro

A hand holds a Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro earbud and a Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) earbud.

Similar design, similar price.

While the Pixel Buds are the all-around choice for Android users, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro () are the ideal choice if you happen to have a flagship Samsung phone. Samsung caught some flack for copying the AirPods design with their newest earbuds, but I’m not complaining. I find this earbud design comfortable, while the protruding stems make for intuitive pinch and swipe controls.

If you have a Samsung phone, the settings and features of the Galaxy Buds3 Pro integrate natively into the operating system. You can also take advantage of the suite of features that Samsung refers to as Galaxy AI, with the flagship feature being real-time translation to another language while wearing the earbuds. Another perk of using these earbuds with a Samsung device is access to the Samsung Seamless Codec, which provides high-res audio up to 24-bit/96kHz.

In our testing, we found the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro reduce the loudness of external noise by an average of 76%. While this is a step back from the performance of the AirPods Pro 2, it’s still more than enough noise reduction for most use cases. These earbuds provide a bit more emphasis on bass and treble out of the box compared to AirPods, which some might consider a more exciting sound. If you don’t like how they sound out of the box, you can dive into the EQ and tweak to your preference.

Budget alternative: SoundPEATS Capsule 3 Pro+

A hand holds the SoundPEATS Capsule3 Pro Plus earbuds.

These budget earbuds have a premium design.

It’s 2025, and that means you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to get good wireless earbuds anymore. In fact, you can often find great wireless earbuds for less than $100, such as the SoundPEATS Capsule3 Pro+ ().

My favorite thing about these earbuds is their sound quality. The SoundPEATS Capsule3 Pro+ have xMEMS drivers inside each earbud, an innovative new headphone technology that delivers excellent treble clarity. In my opinion, these are among the best-sounding earbuds on the market, an impressive feat considering their price.

The SoundPEATS Capsule3 Pro+ are no slouch in other features either. The ANC reduces outside noise by an average of 81%, right in line with the performance of the flagship offerings. While these earbuds might not integrate into the operating system of your phone quite as seamlessly as the options from Apple, Google, and Samsung, they do still come with the PeatsAudio companion app. Within this app, you can customize the controls, enable the low-latency gaming mode, and adjust the sound in the 10-band equalizer.

Best wireless earbuds overall: Sony WF-1000XM5

The Sony WF-1000XM5 stands out as a top-tier choice in the competitive world of noise canceling earbuds. They are 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous WF-1000XM4, featuring a redesigned shape with more angled nozzles and flexible ear tips, of which you get four sets. All of which makes them a whole heck of a lot more comfortable and secure.

As for active noise cancellation (ANC), the WF-1000XM5 is one of the best in its class. Equipped with new processors and improved microphone systems, our testing shows that these earbuds effectively attenuate low-frequency noise by over 30 dB, resulting in an 87% reduction in perceived noise.

While the default sound profile leans towards a bass-heavy signature, the overall audio quality is excellent. The earbuds offer a wider soundstage and good clarity. Sony’s LDAC codec support also ensures high-quality audio streaming for compatible devices. Other features include customizable touch controls and multipoint connectivity. The Sony Headphones Connect app allows for extensive customization, including EQ adjustments and adaptive sound control.

Best earbuds for iPhone owners: Apple AirPods Pro 2

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 are the premier choice for iPhone users. They seamlessly integrate with the Apple ecosystem and offer a slew of exclusive features, such as easy pairing, automatic switching between devices, and Adaptive Transparency mode. Thanks to the new H2 chip, the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) performance is the best for AirPods so far. The AirPods Pro 2 effectively attenuate low-frequency noise by 20-30dB, translating to an 83% reduction in perceived noise, according to our testing.

Sound quality is excellent, with a slight emphasis on bass that most users will appreciate. The wider soundstage and good clarity across frequencies make for an enjoyable listening experience. The inclusion of personalized Spatial Audio and support for the AAC codec ensures high-fidelity audio for iOS devices. We do wish there was a customizable EQ in the Apple settings app, however.

Battery life has been improved, though it still lags behind the competitors. With ANC enabled, it offers over 6 hours of playback according to our tests, and the case provides an additional 24 hours. The case now features a speaker for easier location tracking and supports MagSafe, Qi wireless, and Apple Watch charging.

If the $249 price tag is too steep for you, there are a handful of solid iPhone earbuds or AirPods Pro alternatives out there for iPhone and Android users alike. You can even snag the first-gen AirPods Pro for .

The best earbuds for noise canceling on a budget: Sony WF-C710N

The Sony WF-C710N offer a compelling blend of features for their mid-range price. In our testing, they delivered reliable active noise canceling that punches well above their weight, with strong passive isolation and ANC combining to reduce noise by an average of 85%. Their sound quality is also impressive for the price — we measured an excellent overall MDAQS score of 4.8. Out of the box, they have a slightly dark tuning, but Sony’s Headphones Connect app lets you fix that with EQ presets or a custom five-band equalizer. Battery life clocks in at over 9 hours per charge based on our tests, and the pill-shaped case is ultra-pocketable. Just don’t expect premium Bluetooth codec support — these only offer SBC and AAC.

While I found the WF-C710N comfortable for long listening sessions, their fit isn’t the most secure. With only three ear tip sizes and no fins or wings, they’re not ideal for workouts, despite the IPX4 water resistance. On the plus side, you still get touch controls, adaptive sound modes, and spatial audio support via Sony 360 Reality Audio (though content is limited). Microphone quality is good enough for calls in most environments, and the lack of wireless charging is forgivable at this price. If you’re after great ANC and solid sound without spending flagship money, the Sony WF-C710N are easy to recommend — especially if you stick to more casual, everyday listening.

Best features on wireless earbuds: JBL Tour Pro 3

The JBL Tour Pro 3 represent a significant leap forward in wireless earbud technology. The standout feature is the Smart Charging Case, which boasts a touchscreen display for easy access to functions like ANC control, EQ settings, and even acts as an audio transmitter for wired sources.

The sound of the JBL Tour Pro 3 is definitely geared toward a more consumer-friendly audience. The earbuds support multiple codecs, including LDAC and LC3, ensuring high-quality audio streaming. While the default sound signature has a slight bass emphasis, the 10-band EQ in the app allows for precise customization.

Due to the large size of the earbuds, comfort may vary, but multiple ear tip options are provided. The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) performs very well, quieting about 83-84% of outside noise.

Overall, the JBL Tour Pro 3 offers a feature-rich package that’s hard to beat, making it an excellent choice for tech enthusiasts who want the most advanced and future-proof earbuds available, though it will cost you a pretty penny.

Best wireless earbuds under $100: CMF Buds 2 Plus

The CMF Buds 2 Plus are a solid value in terms of audio performance, battery life, and personalization features, especially considering their sub-$100 price. With high-resolution LDAC codec support, a refined sound signature, and Smart Adaptive ANC, these earbuds deliver premium experiences at a budget price. The Personal Sound feature, powered by Audiodo, customizes the EQ to your hearing profile, while a refined build and reliable touch controls round out the hardware experience. While the ANC doesn’t quite hit the advertised 50dB reduction, it still performs admirably across a range of environments. The sound quality is also up to par, as the earbuds earn a commendable 4.8 overall score in our MDAQS testing.

However, the CMF Buds 2 Plus stumbles by removing the Smart Dial, a standout feature from the Buds Pro 2 that offered intuitive tactile control. The new lanyard-style dial feels like a downgrade in both form and function, making the Plus version feel less premium despite technical improvements. For existing CMF Buds Pro 2 owners, the upgrade may not be compelling enough unless personalized sound is a must-have. Yet for new buyers, these earbuds set a new benchmark in their price tier, making them an easy recommendation.

The wireless earbuds with the best sound quality: Creative Aurvana Ace Mimi

The Creative Aurvana Ace Mimi stand out for one big reason: sound quality and personalization. Using Mimi’s hearing test technology, these earbuds tailor their sound to your hearing profile, which helped me uncover details I didn’t know I was missing. Combined with the xMEMS drivers, the Ace Mimi deliver a detailed audio experience with standout clarity in the mids and highs. Out of the box, the tuning leans bass-heavy — I noticed it on tracks like “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish — but you can easily dial it back using the 10-band EQ or one of the 40+ presets in the Creative app. According to MDAQS scoring, these earbuds rank among the best we’ve ever tested, earning near-perfect marks for Timbre and Immersiveness.

Comfort is another strong point: at just 4.7g each, with five ear tip sizes and an IPX5 rating, the Ace Mimi held up well during long sessions and workouts. Noise canceling isn’t class-leading, but it’s solid enough for daily use, and the Ambient Mode impressed me with how naturally it amplified my surroundings. While the earbuds last just under 5 hours with ANC enabled, wireless charging and LDAC support help round out the feature set. At $129.99, the Creative Aurvana Ace Mimi offer flagship-level sound and customization at a mid-range price—making them one of the best value picks for audio-first listeners.

Best wireless earbuds for working out or running: Powerbeats Pro 2

The Powerbeats Pro 2 mark a strong return for one of the most iconic workout earbuds, now updated with features like heart-rate monitoring, active noise canceling, and Apple’s H2 chip. In my testing, I found the secure ear hook design perfect for intense workouts—these earbuds didn’t budge, even during sprints or circuit training. The addition of ANC significantly improves sound isolation, and the heart-rate sensor—while not essential for everyone—could be a game-changer for serious athletes. That said, there’s no Bluetooth Multipoint, and the sound quality drops noticeably when ANC is disabled. Still, for iPhone users in particular, these are some of the most seamless and feature-rich workout earbuds you can buy in 2025.

However, all that tech comes at a steep price. At $249.99, the Powerbeats Pro 2 aren’t exactly a budget pick. If you just want solid workout performance without extras like heart-rate tracking, options like the Beats Fit Pro or Jaybird Vista 2 offer better value. If you’re a data-driven athlete, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport provides even more biometric tracking—but at an even higher price. Ultimately, the Powerbeats Pro 2 earn their spot on our best workout earbuds list thanks to their rock-solid fit, long battery life, and Apple ecosystem perks, even if they’re not the best deal for every user.

  • Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 (): The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 have advanced features such as Bluetooth 5.4 with atpX Lossless.

How we test wireless earbuds

Loop Experience Plus earplug in the ear of a B&K5128 test head.

All objective testing is carried out using our B&K5128 acoustic test head.

Using a dummy head, product designers can test out how audio products will perform for most people — and so do we. We run a number of tests, including frequency response, isolation, and battery life. You can read more about it here and learn more about the specifics.

  • For each product, we played several sine sweeps through the earphones. Once we arrived at a representative result, we logged the frequency response, demonstrating the hallmarks of a good acoustic seal.
  • To test isolation, we play a sample of shaped noise at 90dB(SPL) (measured at the eardrum), once with the headphones off and another with the headphones on. We then subtract one measurement from the other.
  • To test the battery, we use shaped noise and a real-time analyzer to find the setting needed to output consistent audio peaking at 75dB(SPL) from the products. We play our music test track on an infinite loop. This means every result can be directly compared.

These three basic tests cover the biggest areas of concern with wireless earbuds. Remember that your battery life will vary if you tend to crank the volume. Additionally, you could squeak out better isolation performance if you use third-party tips on your earbuds.

Frequently asked questions

Why you should get wireless earbuds

[caption id="attachment_61398" align="alignnone" width="1024"]A hand holds a Apple AirPods (3rd generation) earbud by the stem to reveal the open-type fit and embedded sensors. The Apple AirPods (3rd generation) didn’t make the cut among the best wireless earbuds for its poor fit, sound quality, and limited feature set.[/caption]

We’re witnessing a wireless epoch. It’s no longer niche or novel to listen completely untethered on your way to work. Technological advancements have lowered the financial barrier to entry, and cheap wireless options are readily available to budget listeners.

Wireless earbuds can still be for you if you don’t commute, especially if you like to exercise. Nothing’s more convenient than listening completely wire-free. There are many great wireless workout earbuds for runners and gym rats alike. Numerous companies have gone the extra mile by getting products officially IP certified, but they also integrate useful athletic features (e.g., ear hook design, silicone wing tips, Ambient Aware mode).

While it’s true that battery depletion is a problem, resulting in a shortened lifetime of wireless earbuds compared to their on-ear or over-ear headphone alternatives, you’re paying a premium for convenience. For some of us, it’s easy to justify the cost. Others may be better off with wired earbuds or dealing with bulkier wireless headphones.

What is Bluetooth Multipoint for wireless earbuds?

Bluetooth Multipoint is a convenient feature that allows compatible headphones and earbuds to maintain simultaneous connections to multiple devices. This means you can seamlessly switch your audio source between, say, your laptop and smartphone without manually disconnecting from one before connecting to the other.

While convenient, Bluetooth Multipoint does have some limitations like audio quality constraints when streaming from two sources simultaneously. For a deeper dive into how it works and its pros and cons, check out our full explainer on Bluetooth Multipoint.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Generally speaking, the standalone battery life of wireless earbuds averages anywhere from three to six hours of battery life. Anything that falls above or below that is unusual. The charging cases typically provide an extra two to three charges, giving you at least 9 hours of total playtime. Check out our breakdown of how long AirPods last, including how you can make them last longer.

What is a Bluetooth codec?

[caption id="attachment_20100" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]true wireless earbuds - Graph of Bluetooth codec signal strength vs dropped seconds of audio LDAC 330 underperformed compared to aptX and aptX HD.[/caption]

As with any nascent product category, early adopters will need to know a bit more about the tech that defines it. Namely, they need to know what to look for when deciding whether a product will be good or not. With Bluetooth audio, that means figuring out what Bluetooth codecs both their phone and their earbuds support.

As per our investigative testing, LDAC isn’t necessarily Hi-Res. What’s more, AAC is bunk when used on Android devices and should really only be used when listening via iPhone. If your Android phone automatically streams over AAC, you can always force developer settings to mandate SBC streaming instead. Android users, stick to aptX.

Are wireless earbuds better than Bluetooth?

No, wireless earbuds use Bluetooth technology for wireless connectivity. Bluetooth is the standard that allows wireless earbuds to connect to devices without cables.

How much do good earbuds cost?

A good pair of wireless earbuds typically costs between $100 and $400. This range includes options with high-quality sound, reliable connectivity, and additional features like noise cancelation and water resistance. While there are cheaper alternatives available, they might compromise on sound quality, battery life, or durability. Investing at least $100 or more will generally ensure a balance between performance and value.

What are the longest-lasting wireless earbuds?

In terms of product lifespan, most wireless earbuds generally do not last more than three or four years, primarily due to battery degradation. Over time, these batteries lose their ability to hold a charge, leading to reduced playback time and eventually making the earbuds unusable. While some models might offer slightly better longevity due to the build quality, the small form factor inherently restricts their overall lifespan. To maximize the lifespan of wireless earbuds, it’s important to follow best practices for battery care, such as not exposing them to extreme temperatures and avoiding letting the battery fully deplete regularly.

How do I choose the best wireless earbuds for me?

With the vast array of wireless earbuds available, choosing the right pair can be daunting. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting the best wireless earbuds for your needs:

  • Fit and Comfort: Proper fit is crucial for optimal sound quality and noise isolation. Look for earbuds that come with multiple ear tip sizes, especially for small ears, or offer a secure, customizable fit. Comfort is also essential, especially if you plan to wear them for extended periods.
  • Sound Quality: Assess your audio preferences and prioritize earbuds with a sound signature that aligns with your taste. Review the frequency response and consider earbuds with customizable EQ settings if you prefer to fine-tune the sound.
  • Noise Cancellation: If you plan to use your earbuds in noisy environments, active noise cancellation (ANC) can significantly improve your listening experience by reducing external sounds.
  • Battery Life: Longer battery life translates to fewer interruptions and charges. Look for earbuds with at least 6-8 hours of playback time per charge, and consider the additional charges provided by the charging case.
  • Connectivity and Codecs: Ensure the earbuds are compatible with your devices and support the latest Bluetooth standards and codecs (e.g., AAC, aptX, LDAC) for higher audio quality and stable connectivity.
  • Water/Sweat Resistance: If you plan to use your earbuds during workouts or in humid conditions, look for an IP rating (e.g., IPX4, IPX7) that indicates the level of water and sweat resistance.
  • Additional Features: Consider other features that may be important to you, such as wireless charging, touch controls, transparency mode, or voice assistant integration.

By evaluating these factors based on your specific needs and preferences, you can narrow down your options and choose the best wireless earbuds that provide an optimal listening experience.

While there are plenty of amazing headphones and earbuds out there, we usually recommend Apple audio gear to those of you invested in the Apple ecosystem. It just makes more sense, and Apple products fare very well against the competition. The Apple AirPods Max and AirPods Pro 2 are the best offerings from the brand, and they are both on sale today, sweetening the deal even further.

These offers come from Amazon. In the case of the Apple AirPods Max, all color versions are equally discounted.

Apple AirPods Max: The best Apple headphones

If you’re looking for the very best audio quality and experience from Apple, the AirPods Max are the obvious option. We gave these plenty of praise in our Apple AirPods Max review, and they are even listed as the top option for Apple users in our list of the best headphones.

These headphones offer that clean, metallic design Apple is now known for. They look and feel amazing, and we also found them to be very comfortable. The earpads and fabric band are soft, not to mention they look great.

It’s not just great looks that make these outstanding headphones, though. They are pricey, high-end cans, after all! You’ll enjoy impressive audio quality and ANC performance that competes only against the top choices.

Purple AirPods Max headphones next to their case.

These also come with plenty of extra features, including auto-pausing, automatic device switching, gesture controls, Siri support, and more. However, many of these capabilities are Apple-exclusive. Just keep that in mind.

Like all other headphones, the AirPods Max passed our standardized tests. Their battery life was pretty good, at 21 hours. While not the best in this category, these actually surpassed our expectations, as Apple promises 20 hours of battery life.

Do they have any downsides? Well, they are very expensive, but the price is a bit more comfortable right now. Additionally, they are large over-the-ear headphones, and we know many of you prioritize portability. If you want something you can easily carry around, read the next section!

Apple AirPods Pro 2: The best Apple earbuds

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 are the best earbuds coming from the brand. These offer awesome sound quality and very competent ANC performance.

These are small and portable, and they feature a very comfortable fit, thanks to the rubber tips. These help both block out external sound and provide a secure fit. You would have to try hard for these to fall off your ears.

TKTK

You’ll enjoy all the great features high-end Apple audio gear has to offer. These include automatic device switching, spatial audio, auto-pausing, wireless charging, and more.

A huge benefit of these is that they are actually IP54-rated, which means they offer a nice level of dust and water resistance. Battery life is also pretty good at five hours and 43 minutes, and the case provides an extra 24 hours of listening time.

Regardless of which model you pick, you’ll love how well these will work with your Apple devices. There’s really no going wrong with either version. Which is best for you depends on your form factor preferences, really.

Get AirPods Pro 2-level ANC for less than 1/3 the price with these earbuds https://www.soundguys.com/get-airpods-pro-2-level-anc-for-less-than-1-3-the-price-with-these-earbuds-138701/ https://www.soundguys.com/get-airpods-pro-2-level-anc-for-less-than-1-3-the-price-with-these-earbuds-138701/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 27 May 2025 11:15:31 +0000 https://www.soundguys.com/get-airpods-pro-2-level-anc-for-less-than-1-3-the-price-with-these-earbuds-138701/ I recently finished testing the CMF Buds 2 Plus, the latest budget wireless earbuds from Nothing’s sub-brand. At just $69, they offer some of the best price-to-performance value we’ve seen, especially when it comes to active noise canceling (ANC). In our lab tests, they delivered ANC performance that rivals Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 ().

So, is Apple’s premium price still justified? Or are you just paying the iOS tax?

What the measurements show

As with any earbuds, achieving a proper fit is critical for optimal noise canceling. The CMF Buds 2 Plus include three sizes of silicone ear tips, while the AirPods Pro 2 come with four. Once sealed properly, both earbuds offer similar levels of isolation, and that’s when the ANC can really shine.

As you can see in the chart above, the AirPods Pro 2 block 20 to 30dB of outside noise, performing best in the midrange frequencies, great for consistent background noise like engines or AC units. The CMF Buds 2 Plus, however, reach up to 40dB of attenuation, especially in higher-pitched frequencies like voices and traffic that can become a bother while out and about.

Overall, both earbuds reduce the perceived loudness of outside noise by an average of 83%. That’s not unusual for high-end ANC buds, but it’s remarkable for something that costs less than a third of the price.

Is Apple’s price worth it?

Yes, the AirPods Pro 2 pack some impressive features: seamless iCloud device switching, always-on Siri, Find My integration, adaptive transparency, and even hearing aid functionality. If you’re deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, those extras can add value.

But for most people, the essentials matter more. The CMF Buds 2 Plus block just as much noise, scored identically in our sound quality testing, and offer longer battery life with ANC on — around 8 hours, compared to Apple’s 6.

So if you’re not going to use all the iOS bells and whistles, and just want a solid pair of earbuds that nails the basics — great sound, strong ANC, and all-day battery — there’s no reason to spend $250 anymore. Your ears (and your wallet) will be much happier with the CMF Buds 2 Plus.

Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 vs AirPods Pro 2: A clear winner https://www.soundguys.com/beyerdynamic-amiron-300-vs-airpods-pro-2-a-clear-winner-136420/ https://www.soundguys.com/beyerdynamic-amiron-300-vs-airpods-pro-2-a-clear-winner-136420/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 18 Apr 2025 12:07:38 +0000 https://www.soundguys.com/beyerdynamic-amiron-300-vs-airpods-pro-2-a-clear-winner-136420/ Beyerdynamic is swinging for the fences with the AMIRON 300 wireless earbuds, with a premium price tag that matches up with established players in the market. Apple is at the top of that list of established players, and the AirPods Pro 2 are one of the most popular earbud models in the world. So if you are looking for the best premium earbud experience, should you go with Beyerdynamic or Apple? After testing both, I can tell you this isn’t as close a contest as their prices suggest.

How has this article been updated?

This article was originally published on April 18, 2025, and is the first version. Updates will follow as needed.

What’s it like to use the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 compared to the Apple AirPods Pro 2?

A hand holds the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 earbuds in their charging case. A hand holds the left earbud of the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) to show off the stem.

The Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 have a lovely case — compact, grippy, and stylish with a soft matte finish and elegant cream colorway. The earbuds themselves look great, but in my testing, the fit just doesn’t hold up. Even with five sizes of silicone ear tips, I couldn’t get a stable seal, and they slipped out frequently during movement. The glossy stemless design doesn’t help, and adjusting the fit often triggers accidental taps. The AMIRON 300 earbuds have IP54 water-resistance, but the case is not water-resistant.

By contrast, the AirPods Pro 2 have the same iconic white look as before, but this time with a USB-C case that now supports IP54 water resistance, the same as the buds. You get four ear tip sizes and an ear tip fit test to help dial in your seal. The stemmed design is easy to grip and place. I did have a few snags with long hair or a towel during workouts, but the earbuds always popped back in securely.

How do you control Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300?

The AMIRON 300 use tap-based controls that can be customized in the Beyerdynamic app, but I found the controls frustrating. Even small adjustments often triggered unwanted commands, which led me to disable single-tap gestures entirely.

[table id=589 /]

How do you control Apple AirPods Pro 2?

The AirPods Pro 2 have pressure-sensitive stem controls, and they work flawlessly. You can even swipe up or down the stem to control volume — something the AMIRON 300 can’t do. Siri support and automatic play/pause add convenience, and it’s all deeply integrated into iOS.

Do the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 or Apple AirPods Pro 2 have more features?

Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 app home screen. Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 app equalizer. Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 controls.

Both earbuds have software features, but the experience differs drastically.

The Beyerdynamic app offers control customization, battery info, and a five-band EQ with some presets. It’s functional, but feels very standard. There’s no real innovation here, and no special audio processing features beyond basic EQ.

An iPhone 12 mini displays the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) spatial audio modes with the case and a smart watch next to it.

The iPhone Settings app and Control Center are where you go to customize the listening experience.

The AirPods Pro 2 integrate directly into iOS, allowing access to ANC modes, Spatial Audio personalization, ear tip fit test, and Find My tracking — all without a separate app download. Android users miss out, but for iPhone owners, it’s a seamless experience. The AirPods Pro 2 have also received lots of over the air updates since their launch, including full hearing-aid functionality.

How do the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 and Apple AirPods Pro 2 connect?

A hand holds a Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 earbud.

Connection quality is great with these earbuds.

Both earbuds support Bluetooth 5.3, which is great for stable connections and energy efficiency.

The AMIRON 300 support SBC, AAC, and LDAC — a major win for Android audiophiles looking for high-res playback. I experienced no connection issues or dropouts in my testing.

Screen shots of the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) pairing pop-up cards on an iPhone.

When you first pair the AirPods Pro 2 with your iPhone, a few pop-up cards appear.

The AirPods Pro 2 only support SBC and AAC, but Apple optimizes AAC for near-lossless quality on iOS devices. The H2 chip enables fast pairing, device switching via iCloud, and low-latency audio. Android users don’t get all those benefits.

Is battery life better on the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 or Apple AirPods Pro 2?

The AMIRON 300 are rated for up to 10 hours of playback, with 28 extra hours in the case, and support USB-C and wireless charging.

In our testing, the AirPods Pro 2 lasted 5 hours and 43 minutes with ANC enabled, just shy of Apple’s 6-hour claim. The case offers an additional 24 hours. You get fast charging and support for USB-C, MagSafe, Qi, and even Apple Watch chargers.

Do the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 or Apple AirPods Pro 2 block noise better?

Noise canceling is a dead draw. Our testing shows that both the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 and Apple AirPods Pro 2 reduce external noise by an average of 83% with ANC enabled. With the AMIRON 300, you can adjust ANC strength in the app or use Adaptive ANC, which adjusts based on your environment.

The AirPods Pro 2 improve over the previous model with better ANC across the spectrum, canceling 20-30dB of external noise depending on frequency. Adaptive Transparency also sets them apart, letting in just the right amount of sound — and reducing the volume of loud surprises like sirens.

Do the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 sound better than the Apple AirPods Pro 2?

Both earbuds perform well in our sound quality tests. The AirPods Pro 2 offer Adaptive EQ and spatial audio features, whereas the AMIRON 300 offer a custom equalizer to tweak the sound.

Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores (MDAQS)

A chart shows the MDAQS scores of the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 earbuds, with an Overall score of 4.8.

An Overall score of 4.8 is very good.

This chart shows the MDAQS results for the Apple AirPods Pro 2 in Default (ANC off) mode. The Timbre score is 4.8, The Distortion score is 4.7, the Immersiveness score is 3.7, and the Overall Score is 4.8).

An overall score of 4.8 is very good.

Both earbuds attain an Overall sound quality score of 4.8 on a scale from 1-5 according to MDAQS. This means it is likely most people will enjoy the sound quality of either earbuds.

What do the Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores mean?

  • Timbre (MOS-T) represents how faithfully the headphones reproduce the frequency spectrum and temporal resolution (timing information).
  • Distortion (MOS-D) represents non-linearities and added noise: higher scores mean cleaner reproduction.
  • Immersiveness (MOS-I) represents perceived source width and positioning: how well virtual sound sources are defined in three-dimensional space.

Objective Measurements

The Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 and AirPods Pro 2 have a very similar default sound. The frequency response of both these earbuds matches up with our preference curve closely, aside from a drop-off in upper treble.

Do the Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 or Apple AirPods Pro 2 have a better microphone?

The AMIRON 300 have six mics with background noise suppression, and voice remains intelligible across different environments. Callers can understand you even in windy or reverberant settings. The AirPods Pro 2 also do a great job in quiet environments, but the mic struggles in noise — voices can cut out entirely when the ANC system gets aggressive. Windy and office conditions reduce intelligibility more than we’d like. That said, AirPods rely on your iPhone for AI processing of background noise, so you will get better microphone quality when using the earbuds with an iPhone than other devices.

This feature was previously reserved for the AirPods Pro lineup. That said, there are still a few reasons to consider upgrading to the AirPods Pro 2 instead of getting the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. In this AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation vs AirPods Pro 2 comparison, you’ll find out exactly which of Apple’s earbuds are the better option for you.

How has this article been updated?

  • April 10, 2025: Added an alternatives section.

What’s it like to use the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation compared to the AirPods Pro 2?

The biggest difference between the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 is in the design of the earbuds. The AirPods Pro 2 come with four different sizes of silicon ear tips that insert snugly into your ear canal. On the other hand, the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation do not have ear tips, and rather have a one-size-fits-all unsealed design.

If the AirPods 4 do not fit your ears well, you won’t enjoy using them. For that reason, we highly recommend you try on the AirPods 4 before buying, if you have the opportunity. On the other hand, if the AirPods Pro 2 don’t fit perfectly out of the box, you can experiment with the different sizes of ear tips.

One hand holds an AirPods 4 earbud without an ear tip while another hand holds an AirPods Pro 2 earbud with an ear tip.

To ear tip, or to not ear tip, that is the question.

Beyond just comfort, how your earbuds fit is crucial to their performance. If the AirPods 4 do not fit snuggly in your ears, the sound quality and noise canceling performance will significantly suffer. On the other hand, some people prefer the unsealed design of the AirPods 4 simply because they don’t like jamming things down their ear canals. To each their own, as long as you know what you are signing up for.

Beyond the ear tips, the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are very similar in build to the AirPods Pro 2. Both have some minor water-resistance, which means you can wear them in the rain or during a sweaty workout. The AirPods 4 case is slightly smaller than the AirPods Pro 2 case, which means it can fit in a wider variety of pockets.

How do you control AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation?

Just like the AirPods Pro 2, you can pinch the stem of the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation to control music playback. That said, you will notice an absence of swipe control support to adjust volume. There are other ways you can interact with the earbuds though, including voice interactions with Siri and head nods to answer or deline a call.

[table id=515 /]

How do you control AirPods Pro 2?

The AirPods Pro 2 support pinch controls, as well as swipe controls for volume. You can interact with the AirPods Pro 2 in all the other same ways as the AirPods 4, including voice control and head nods.

[table id=229 /]

Do the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation have more features than the AirPods Pro 2?

A screenshot of the Airpods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation controls within the Settings app. A screenshot of the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation customization options inside of the Settings app. A screenshot of the AirPods with Active Noise Cancellation listening controls inside of control centre.

The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and the AirPods Pro 2 both have the H2 chip to interact with your Apple devices. Since they have the same chip, you get pretty much all the same features on the AirPods 4 as you do with the AirPods Pro 2. This includes things like finding your lost earbuds and case, spatial audio, head tracking, and Adaptive Audio to adjust listening modes.

You need the AirPods Pro 2 to use the hearing aid functionality.

One big advantage of the AirPods Pro 2 though is that they can be used as a hearing aid, something the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation can not do. If you have the AirPods Pro 2, you can take a five-minute hearing test to assess your hearing ability. The AirPods Pro 2 will then amplify your surroundings, and media playback, to compensate accordingly.

How do the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 connect?

Pairing AirPods is as simple as opening the case.

Just like all previous generations of AirPods, the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation work best with Apple devices. Connect to one of your iCloud devices, and the AirPods automatically connect to all of your other devices. The AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 both use Bluetooth 5.3 with support for SBC and AAC. We didn’t experience any connectivity issues with either the AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation during our testing period.

Is battery life better on the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation or AirPods Pro 2?

Hands holding the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 charging cases showing the USB-C port.

Both now have USB-C charging ports.

In our battery testing, the AirPods Pro 2 lasted 5 hours and 43 minutes with ANC turned on. We are still currently testing the AirPods 4 with ANC turned on, but with it turned off we found the AirPods 4 last 6 hours and 21 minutes. On the other hand, Apple says you can expect one additional hour of use from the AirPods Pro 2 compared to the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Regardless, both have enough charge to get through a day of normal use. Combined with the charging case, either set of earbuds can last up to 30 hours of total playback time.

You can charge the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPod Pro 2 a variety of ways. The charging cases support USB-C, Apple Watch chargers, and Qi wireless chargers. The AirPods Pro 2 case also supports MagSafe chargers.

Do the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation or AirPods Pro 2 block noise better?

If you plan on listening in noisy environments, the AirPods Pro 2 are superior to the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, thanks to their ear tips. The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation do a pretty decent job of blocking out mid-high frequency noise, such as the sounds of people talking. Our testing shows it can reduce these sounds by up to 20dB, which is a 75% perceived reduction in loudness. That said, the lack of ear tips to physically block out low-frequency sounds means that the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation can not block out the rumble of an airplane engine. If you frequently travel, the AirPods Pro 2 are the better option.

As you can see in the chart above, the AirPods Pro 2 can block out noise across the entire audible spectrum. No matter what environment you are in, you will notice the ANC is very effective. In fact, the AirPods Pro 2 are some of the best noise canceling earbuds on the market, as our testing shows they reduce the loudness of noise by an average of 83%.

Do the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation sound better than the AirPods Pro 2?

Most people will prefer the sound quality of the AirPods Pro 2 to that of the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Moreover, your impression of the AirPods 4 sound quality will vary wildly depending on how well the earbuds fit in your ears. Since the AirPods Pro 2 ear tips provide a snug fit, you can enjoy more consistent sound quality, especially when it comes to bass.

The AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation both come with Adaptive EQ, which adjusts the frequency response based on your ears. They also both support Spatial Audio, which works best when listening to Dolby Atmos mixes on Apple Music.

Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Scores (MDAQS)

The charts below show how the sound of the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 were assessed by the Multi-Dimensional Audio Quality Score (MDAQS) algorithm from HEAD acoustics.

This chart shows the MDAQS results for the Apple AirPods 4 ANC in Default mode. The Timbre score is 3.7, The Distortion score is 3.5, the Immersiveness score is 3.8, and the Overall Score is 3.6). This chart shows the MDAQS results for the Apple AirPods Pro 2 in Default (ANC off) mode. The Timbre score is 4.8, The Distortion score is 4.7, the Immersiveness score is 3.7, and the Overall Score is 4.8).

As you can see, the AirPods Pro 2 attain a much higher Overall score according to a simulated panel of listeners. This is a result of higher scores in Timbre and Distortion, which isn’t surprising given the benefits of ear tips that provide a tight seal.

While the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 sound the same in the mids, they differ in the lows and highs. In particular, the AirPods 4 are lacking in sub-bass frequencies below 100Hz. If you like thumping low end, you’ll prefer the sound of the AirPods Pro 2.

The AirPods 4 also under-emphasize frequencies around 3-6kHz, which means less detail on vocal harmonies and guitars compared to the AirPods Pro 2. On the other hand, the AirPods 4 have more extension in the highest ranges of human hearing up to 20kHz, compared to the AirPods Pro 2 which fall off starting at 8kHz. This is particularly helpful if you have suffered from age-related hearing loss.

Do the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation or AirPods Pro 2 have a better microphone?

You can use both the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 microphones for taking calls on the go. Note that the microphones perform better when AirPods are paired to an iPhone, since they lean on the device to handle the processing of background noise. When connected to an iPhone, both do a great job of blocking out background noise in a variety of environments.

Apple AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC

The Apple AirPods 4 and Apple AirPods 4 with ANC are pretty good basic earbuds. They won’t exactly win any awards, but they work very well for the price. Especially if you can get them on sale, like today.

All things considered, we had a relatively pleasant experience reviewing these earbuds. While this may vary, depending on your ear shape and size, we found that the new design offers an improved fit. I own this model, and happen to agree. It makes sense because Apple made a special effort to make these fit well on most people, using thousands of ear scans and 50 million data points to optimize the shape.

The sound quality is pretty nice, and because of the inclusion of the H2 chip, you get plenty of great features and improved performance. You’ll enjoy direct access to Siri, automatic device switching, auto pausing, stem-pressing controls, Find My support, and more.

The only difference between these two models is that the higher-end version offers ANC, as the name suggests. Again, while not amazing, we found the ANC performance to be pretty nice. Especially considering these have an open-ear design with no tips to block out sound naturally.

Apple AirPods Pro 2

The AirPods Pro 2 may be from 2022, but they are still the best earbuds Apple has to offer. At $169, they are also not much more expensive than the $148.99 AirPods 4 with ANC. You might as well upgrade unless you prefer not to have actual tips.

If you opt for the higher-end Apple AirPods Pro 2, you’ll be rewarded with excellent sound quality and much better ANC performance. The tips will help block out external sound, as well as provide a more secure fit. We can confidently say there is nearly no chance these will fall off on their own, something regular AirPods users often complain about.

These also get an IPX4 rating, which is the only area where the AirPods 4 model does better. Those get an IP54 rating. Regardless, you won’t need to worry about light exposure to sweat and other liquids. Just like the AirPods 4, these come with an H2 chip, so you’ll also enjoy the improved performance, better audio, and extra feature set.

Of course, these also get all the fancy features, such as auto-switching between Apple devices, spatial audio, wireless charging, gesture controls, auto-pausing, etc.

Are you getting any of these? Try to hurry, because these are the best offers we have seen in a long time. They may be gone soon! If you still need some help deciding between these, here’s our full comparison between the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2.

If you’re still on the lookout for some great headphones or earbuds, here are today’s hottest offers.

Get the Sony WH-1000XM5 for $298 ($101.99 off)

Get the Sony WH-1000XM4 for $198 ($150 off)

Get the Apple AirPods Max with Lightning for $399.99 ($150 off)

Get the Apple AirPods Pro 2 for $189.99 ($59.01 off)

Most of these deals are available from Amazon. The only exception is the Apple AirPods Max deal, which is only available from Best Buy. Regardless of which headphones you pick, the discounts apply to all color versions available.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Have you checked out our list of the best headphones available? You can check it out for great alternatives, but let’s give you a spoiler: the Sony WH-1000XM5 stand proud as our top choice.

These headphones are fabulous in every department. The sound quality is among the best in the industry, and we were pretty impressed with the ANC performance. Even the microphone sounds outstanding! The design is great, offering a minimalist aesthetic that is both modern and sturdy. Not to mention, these are very comfortable headphones. We found that wearing these for long sessions was no issue.

Also, the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones have an impressive battery life. We ran these through our standardized tests and got about 32 hours with ANC enabled. That’s not even the best part, though. Turn off noise canceling, and the battery life will extend to an impressive 53 hours.

As high-end cans, these also get plenty of fancy features, such as auto-pausing, Bluetooth Multipoint, touch gestures, Find My Device compatibility, and more.

Sony WH-1000XM4

While the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones are amazing, and they are the latest model in the series, we often recommend the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones as a better alternative for those who want to save more. These offer a better bang per buck, as they get really close to XM5 quality while saving you $100.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 may be about four years old, but they are still amazing cans in 2024. They still have exceptional audio quality and ANC performance. Sure, the XM5 model is better in both departments, but not by much.

Also, it’s important to keep in mind these were launched as premium headphones, so you get all the fancy features you can expect. They still have a nice design and sturdy construction. Features included Bluetooth Multipoint, auto-pausing, touch gesture controls, and more. While not as impressive, the battery life is still pretty good at 24 hours per charge.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are great headphones if you don’t mind using the now-outdated Lightning connection. Having USB-C is nice, but that is the only difference between the newer and older models, and getting the Lightning version saves you about $150!

Regardless, the Apple AirPods Max are amazing headphones, and they are actually our pick for the best headphones for iPhone users. Of course, the same applies to iPad and Mac owners. The AirPods Max offer great features, but some of the main ones are exclusive to Apple devices. These include Siri support, auto-pausing, and automatic device switching.

Apple fans will absolutely love these. They follow Apple’s design language, offering a minimalist look and a metal construction. We also loved the large earpads and fabric band, which make the headset very comfortable. Not to mention, the sound quality and ANC performance compete only with the best headphones in the industry. Battery life isn’t as amazing as the headphones listed above, but we still managed to get over 21 hours per full charge.

Apple AirPods Pro 2

If you are an Apple user and don’t like huge headphones, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 are also our favorite earbuds for iPhone users. These are a bit older, launched in 2022, but they are still Apple’s highest-end earbuds, and they are amazing, even by 2024 standards.

The AirPods Pro 2 have really good audio quality, and ANC performance is also outstanding. The tips help block out external noise from entering, and also make for a better fit than Apple’s lower-end earbuds. It will take a lot of effort for these to fall out of your ears on their own.

It’s also nice that you get an IPX4 rating with these, so you will have more peace of mind if these get some exposure to liquids. These come with Apple’s H2 chip, which improved performance and feature support. You’ll get a great set of capabilities, including auto-switching, auto-pausing, gesture press controls, spatial audio, wireless charging, and more.

Battery life is pretty decent for wireless earbuds. You will get five hours and 43 minutes per charge, and the case holds an extra 24 hours of juice.

Holiday deals are starting to disappear, and we’re glad to see these are still around. We would act quickly and get these as soon as possible, though. We’re not sure how long these offers will stick around.

AirPods Pro 2 owners get much more than they paid for with iOS 18 https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-pro-2-hearing-aid-value-130128/ https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-pro-2-hearing-aid-value-130128/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 30 Dec 2024 20:40:53 +0000 https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-pro-2-hearing-aid-value-130128/ Consumers love Apple as much as they hate it, and for good reason. Apple relentlessly pursues hardware sales and has been embroiled in many a controversy. This fall, however, it pulled a very un-Apple-like move and released a tremendous feature for its two-year-old AirPods Pro 2. With iOS 18, Apple made the AirPods Pro 2 the first FDA-approved, over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid earbuds.

I would have expected Apple to reserve this feature for the AirPods Pro 3. Instead, Apple released it for free. Within the Apple ecosystem, this is a huge win for listeners with manageable hearing loss. And if you walk freely beyond Apple’s gates, it may also signal a shift in the industry’s approach to consumers.

The AirPods Pro 2 function as clinical-grade hearing aids

The Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) case open with the earbuds next to an iPhone 12 mini.

You’ll need an iPhone to take advantage of most of the AirPods’ features.

Each iOS 18 upgrade has added impactful features to the AirPods Pro 2 repertoire. Apple’s hearing health options are among the most impactful. As approved by the FDA, the AirPods Pro 2 meet the criteria as proper OTC hearing aids. Full disclosure, this is specifically for people with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. If you have severe hearing loss, the hearing aid feature won’t be of much help and you’ll need to consult a professional. For the rest of us, though, this is a big value add.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) 2023 OTC Hearing Aid Survey, the average cost of OTC hearing aids was $233. The AirPods Pro 2 retail for $249. This feature nearly doubles the value of the AirPods Pro 2. I’ve yet to find data indicating where the AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid performance falls relative to the bulk of OTC offerings. However, some OTC products cost thousands of dollars, which would only add to the AirPods Pro 2 value.

The AirPods Pro 2 are a good start, but they won’t outperform everything on the market.

Make no mistake, you still need a modern iPhone or iPad to use this feature. In typical Apple fashion, the setup process is a breeze. The hearing test emits a series of test tones. When you hear a tone, tap the screen. If a tone plays and you don’t tap the screen, this indicates that you cannot perceive that specific frequency. The test takes about five minutes and is informed by over 150,000 real audiograms and millions of simulations.

Immediately after taking the test, the results populate on screen informing you of your left and right ear’s performance. You can then choose to read up more on hearing loss and how a hearing aid can help. You may also enable the hearing aid abilities of the AirPods Pro 2 right from your phone. If you want to tweak the programmed settings even further, go right ahead.

From Apple’s Health app, you can view your audiogram. This is a particularly cool feature for those who want to perform a casual longitudinal study on themselves. Over time, the audiograms can reveal how your hearing abilities change.

Whether or not your hearing test results indicate hearing loss, you’ll want to preserve your hearing abilities. Apple’s third high-value iOS 18 feature is Hearing Protection. This feature works across all listening modes and protects your ears from loud environmental noises. All this to say, not only are Apple’s Hearing Health features helping you today, but they’re protecting you for years to come.

Apple isn’t alone, others add value to their buds over time

The Google Pixel Buds Pro and WF-1000XM5 cases next to each other with the earbuds showing.

The Pixel Buds Pro (left) didn’t come with a custom EQ, but Google added that down the line.

Apple is the first big earbud manufacturer to make its earbuds clinical-grade hearing aids, but it’s not the only company going the extra mile. The original Pixel Buds Pro lacked a custom EQ upon release. Well, within a few months, Google addressed this and more. The company gave Pixel Buds Pro owners a multi-band custom EQ option. Listeners also received spatial audio support and conversation detection. Similar to Apple’s addition of hearing aid functionality on the AirPods Pro 2, these are features I expected Google to save for the Pixel Buds Pro 2.

Samsung has also rolled out high-profile updates for its earbuds that buyers didn’t expect upon purchase. Take the Galaxy Buds2 Pro. These buds received 360 Audio Recording with compatible Samsung devices. This unique feature is great for creators who want to record immersive audio for their content. Samsung also treated its older Galaxy Buds Live earbuds to a significant firmware update. Two years after their debut, Samsung added 360 Audio support.

A hand holds the open case with the buds showing of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro in front of green succulents.

Samsung has released updates to all of its Galaxy Buds, among the most notable update is 360 Audio Recording.

Now, most earbud manufacturers with companion apps release firmware updates to their devices. Oftentimes, these updates are fairly basic. They address connection stability and improve the mic and sound quality. This is why it’s commendable when companies release significant updates to their buds. Again, it’s especially notable because they could have just as easily said, “No, you have to buy the next-gen product to access X feature.”

Will we see an industry shift away from planned obsolescence?

A hand unscrews the FairBuds XL.

Some companies like Fairphone are well ahead of the competition regarding consumer-centric design and repairability. I think we’re a long way off from that being the norm.

Should this trend continue, which I hope it does, we consumers may start feeling more valued by big-name brands. No company is perfect, but no matter how you slice it, Apple has received near-universal commendation for its hearing aid certification on the AirPods Pro 2.

I’m not saying every company can or should make their earbuds hearing aids. I simply hope this serves as a sign to the competition: to retain customers in this highly competitive market, you must offer value throughout a product’s life cycle. Perhaps this will spark real pushback against the trend of planned obsolesce. (Ironic that Apple is an example of a force pushing against this given its history.)

The Google Pixel Buds in the open case next to the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro.

Companies like Google, Samsung, and Apple aren’t going to add features purely out of the goodness of their hearts.

Of course, it would be silly to think Apple is adding such a big feature to its years-old earbuds solely because it loves its customers. Intentions aside, the fact is that Apple released a major update to years-old earbuds. Lest we forget, this update doubles the original value of the earbuds at a minimum. Seeing Apple, Google, Samsung, and others expand the functionality of their earbuds throughout their lifecycles is a positive development for us consumers. Ideally, a development that begets a shift in how the industry values customers.

Not all is just, well, and good though. There are potential downsides to this as well. As mentioned, the companies that can perform such updates to their earbuds also manufacture matching smartphones. Having control over every aspect of production is a huge boon to companies that want to pull off update feats. This gives big-name brands yet another edge over less-resourced competition.

To retain customers in this highly competitive market, you must offer value throughout a product's life cycle.

With the future being unknown, I only hope that Apple’s play motivates others to consider more consumer-friendly ways. Perhaps we’ll see more companies continue to improve product performance years into a product’s lifespan. Who knows, we may find ourselves out of the planned obsolescence hole of today and into a consumer-centric future.

Frequently asked questions about the AirPods Pro 2

What other iOS 18 features were added to the AirPods Pro 2?

Apple added hands-free Siri interactions that allowed you to shake or nod your head in response to Siri’s real-time announcements. Apple also added Spatial Audio to gaming, which will be a huge win for those who play FPS-style games, making it even clearer where an enemy’s footsteps originate from. Going hand-in-hand with Spatial Audio for gaming, Apple reduced the latency of its AirPods Pro 2 when connected to an iOS 18 device.

Why should I use the AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids instead of buying hearing aids?

The AirPods Pro 2 are a great option for listeners who don’t have hearing aids but do own a pair of AirPods Pro 2. This is an accessible way to dip your toe into the world of hearing aids and experience what remediation and treatment can feel like. It’s still important to see an audiologist if you have the means, but this is a good stop-gap.

How do I know if I have hearing loss?

According to the CDC, if you have trouble registering speech or high-frequency sounds (e.g., doorbells) you might have hearing loss.

The one thing AirPods do that others can’t https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-adaptive-audio-129105/ https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-adaptive-audio-129105/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2024 19:05:32 +0000 https://www.soundguys.com/airpods-adaptive-audio-129105/ After two years, my Apple AirPods Pro 2 finally bit the dust, prompting me to consider AirPods alternatives. As an iPhone owner, Apple’s AirPods are the best option for those seeking convenience. But I wanted a non-Apple pair of earbuds to make more sense for my needs than AirPods. As it turned out, none of the alternatives offered everything I wanted, specifically Adaptive Audio, or some equivalent. Of course, not everyone likes this feature, but for me, it’s a game-changer and something I couldn’t give up.

Is this feature worth the extra cost to you?

What is Adaptive Audio, and how does it work?

Adaptive Audio on the AirPods Pro 2 with an iPhone 15 Pro. Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness on the AirPods Pro 2 with an iPhone 15 Pro.

Adaptive Audio is Apple’s noise control mode that blends active noise canceling (ANC) and audio passthrough (aka Transparency) technologies on the AirPods Pro 2. With this, you hear a mix of alarming sounds from your environment (e.g., a car horn) while unimportant din (e.g., wind) is canceled out. It isn’t perfect. Still, if I’m walking around or on public transit, I much prefer Adaptive Audio to ANC or Transparency mode alone.

Apple’s AI-powered algorithm can identify voices too, which is one of my favorite applications for Adaptive Audio. The catch for all of this: you need an Apple device like an iPhone to use Adaptive Audio.

The case for Adaptive Audio

The Beats Fit Pro and Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) next to each other in open cases on a wooden surface.

Apple’s very own Beats Fit Pro (left) are great earbuds, but they can’t mix ANC and Transparency like the AirPods Pro 2.

Adaptive Audio provides an ideal listening experience for me. When traveling through the country or my own neighborhood, I get the best of both worlds by tuning in and out at the right times.

Like bone conduction headphones and open earbuds, I can hear my environment and music all at once. My AirPods hush distracting background noise and keep me alert to urgent sounds. Practically speaking, this means the drone of a train car will be muted while important information, like announcements for my next stop, comes through the earbuds clearly. With the weather getting colder, I’m biking less and taking the train more. Suffice it to say, I’ve grown dependent on Adaptive Audio. Another perk is that I prefer the more versatile fit of AirPods, and earbuds at large, to bone conduction headphones.

After getting used to Adaptive Audio, I can't willingly give this feature up.

Beyond biking and walking around, I also like this for working in public places. I’m able to drown out the ambient din of a coffee shop while remaining aware enough if someone asks me to scooch over. I welcome this feature. It promotes prosocial behavior as opposed to earbuds’ Conversation Awareness modes. I’m not too hot about Conversation Awareness since I find it rude to speak to someone with earbuds in.

The case against Adaptive Audio

A hand holds a smartphone showing the Pixel Buds app.

Using the Pixel Buds app was once the only way to adjust EQ modes and toggle the Adaptive Sound setting, but Google has since removed Adaptive Sound from the app.

Of course, not everyone likes the idea of adaptive audio, and I think that’s because early attempts at adaptive sound fell flat. Take Google’s implementation of Adaptive Sound on the Pixel Buds A-Series. This underwhelmed many people, sullying the reputation of adaptive audio modes. Even Google quietly pulled this feature from its app with the release of the Pixel Buds Pro.

Google’s Adaptive Sound is not Apple’s version. Google’s version underwhelmed me and my former colleague. Upon its release, Adaptive Sound adjusted the volume of your media according to your environmental noise. With Adaptive Audio from Apple, compatible AirPods use ANC and Transparency to create an optimized mix of your surroundings. Apple doesn’t affect the loudness of your music like Google.

With Google's latest earbuds, you get noise canceling and audio passthrough, but no option that intelligently mixes the two.

That said, plenty won’t like Apple’s Adaptive Audio because they have a sensitivity to sound changes. This dynamic adjustment could be more distracting than helpful and even disorient certain listeners. Then there’s the fact that Adaptive Audio uses more battery than having the sound mode off. This means you’ll have to recharge your buds more, degrading the batteries quicker.

Do other earbuds have adaptive audio?

Hands hold the Sony WF-1000XM5 and an iPhone displaying the Adaptive Sound Control Settings in the Headphone Connect app.

The Sony Headphones Connect app lets you customize how the earbuds act in various situations.

Other earbuds have a form of Adaptive Audio. Sony calls it Adaptive Sound Control and it operates like Adaptive Audio. In Sony’s case, the WF-1000XM5 sense how you’re moving (or not moving) and enable ANC or ambient sound control accordingly. The Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro have Adaptive Mode, which optimizes the ANC intensity depending on your environment. If you’re in a louder space, expect the ANC to be more intense than if you’re in a library. Jabra, RIP, has something similar.

Many other earbuds have noise canceling, transparency mode, or both, but none of them have Adaptive Audio like Apple’s. This is one of the biggest things, along with Apple’s myriad of accessibility features, that sets the brand apart from others. Not to mention how Apple’s plain Transparency mode is markedly better than most of the competition.

Should you buy the AirPods for Adaptive Audio alone?

The Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation), now with USB-C cable.

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 are among the best earbuds for iPhone owners, but that doesn’t make them the only earbuds worth iPhone owners’ dollars.

While Adaptive Audio is one of the main reasons I purchased another pair of AirPods Pro 2, it is not the sole reason I repurchased them. If you’re an iPhone user, the AirPods Pro 2 have plenty to offer you. My next favorite feature is automatic device switching between Apple devices, along with Apple’s advanced Find My features.

On top of that, just this year the AirPods Pro 2 received FDA approval to function as over-the-counter hearing aids. With this, we are approaching a reality where we can customize precisely what sounds we do (and don’t) want to hear at a given time. The implications of this are as exciting as they are intimidating. I don’t know if I’m ready for a world where we can insulate ourselves like this. However, if you want the option to engage in this kind of future, the AirPods Pro 2 are the strongest contender.

We're halfway into a new reality where we can specifically choose which sounds we want to hear and which sounds we want to mute in our worlds.

That said, I don’t recommend AirPods of any kind to Android phone owners. Why? You wouldn’t even have access to half of the features that make AirPods what they are. Instead, consider other great earbuds like the Sony WF-1000XM5 (). These WF-1000XM5 are the cream of the crop and deliver high marks on just about every measure you can think of. Sony’s stellar noise cancellation will save your sanity during an hours-long flight and its OS-agnostic app affords an identical experience across devices.

Frequently asked questions about AirPods Adaptive Audio

Is Adaptive Audio the same as Spatial Audio?

Adaptive Audio is not the same as Spatial Audio. Adaptive Audio adjusts the mix of noise canceling and Transparency through your AirPods, while Spatial Audio renders sound in a 3D-like field which is particularly fun for movies.

Can Adaptive Audio identify certain sounds and block them out?

Yes, that is exactly what Adaptive Audio does. It is trained to alert listeners to urgent or important sounds and cancel out sounds that listeners would deem unimportant or distracting.

How is Adaptive Audio different from Adaptive EQ?

Adaptive Audio adjusts the mix of noise canceling and Transparency through your AirPods. Adaptive EQ dynamically adjusts the frequency response depending on the shape of your ear canal and any background noise that penetrates the earbud’s seal.

What makes the AirPods special?

The AirPods have plenty of special features when you connect them to an Apple device. For instance, using the AirPods Pro 2 with an iPhone enables Adaptive Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, and Adaptive EQ.
